About

The Office of University Communications is the central communications organization of the University of Pittsburgh. The office manages the reputation of the University; develops and establishes communications strategies and tactics in support of Pitt's mission as a leader in education, pioneer in research, and partner in regional development; and provides communications advice and counsel to Pitt leaders.

A variety of media are engaged to advance the efforts of University Communications. Traditional mass media and digital/social media are employed to communicate to external audiences and internal stakeholders the many Pitt stories of achievement, progress, and momentum. The publication of news and information trumpeting victories, triumphs, discoveries, contributions, awards, and honors of the people and programs of Pitt is at the core of these activities. University Communications also issues official releases, announcements, and messages concerning events and breaking news.

Target external audiences reached through the activities and programs of University Communications include national, regional, and local media; prospective students, their parents, and college advisers; alumni; all levels of government officials; higher education administrators and faculty members; alumni; donors and donor prospects; opinion leaders; and the broader community.

Internal audiences include the faculty, staff, and administrators of the University, as well as Pitt students.

Pitt Magazine, a quarterly publication with a print circulation of more than 300,000 as well as an online edition, and the Pitt Chronicle, an online internal newspaper, are published by University Communications as Pitt's flagship news sources. University Communications also produces PittMed magazine (print and online) for the medical school and oversees the online University Times, as well as the production of various communications projects for Pitt schools, colleges, and other academic and administrative entities.

University Communications handles news media inquiries seeking official responses from Pitt. Such inquiries made to faculty, staff, and administrators are referred to the vice chancellor for communications, who is Pitt's primary spokesperson, or to the senior associate director of news.
